Unexpectedly, the complex that initially forms between thrombin and the reactive site variant of HCII is unstable in the presence of heparin and slowly dissociates, as indicated by the reappearance of thrombin activity after prolonged incubation.  By contrast,  no thrombin is released from the complex in the presence of dermatan sulfate or in the absence of a glycosaminoglycan, even after three days of incubation.
